We frequently have customers make statements like ‘but my skin is oily, and therefore applying more oil will simply make it greasier’. Therefore it is a common misconception to steer clear of oil-based products if your skin is oily. However, this is quite inaccurate.
We hope this blog post will help to bring understanding as to why we get so excited about using oil in our products, and why we believe you should treat oil with oil.
Oily skin can cause breakouts, shine, and make it hard to apply makeup. We get that this is frustrating and can cause all sorts of issues, least of all physical. Developing a regular routine that works for you is integral to healthy skin, and we believe this is formed by a holistic (mind and body) approach Our basic principle at Nathalie Bond is that less is more.
The place to start is by understanding why skin becomes oily. Oily skin basically means the sebaceous glands (a small gland in the skin which secretes a lubricating oily matter, sebum, into the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair) are overactive and are producing more oil.
This can potentially clog pores and attract bacteria. Oily skin has a shiny appearance which needs to be rectified for better skin health. One reason for this is that the oil sitting on the skin surface is susceptible to oxidation from environmental factors like UV rays and car exhausts. When that oil is oxidized, it has been experimentally shown to be very damaging to the skin.
Often oily skin produces more oil as a defence mechanism to balance out the loss of moisture on your skin. By using oil-based products, the oil attracts oil and can dissolve sebum, grease or makeup without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
There are many reasons why oily skin occurs, from genetics, to hormone levels and the weather. For oily skin, you need a product that will naturally exfoliate the skin, deeply cleanse and purify the surface, leaving a smooth, radiant complexion. Generally speaking, dermatologists like patients to keep their skin moisturised, as it keeps it in good condition and prevents Eczema and Dermatitis.
In simple terms, your skin knows what to do with oil, which is why we love to use it at Nathalie Bond. We are cautious about using cream based products as these will often contain more additives and preservatives which can make your skin fight harder to respond and calibrate. With oil based products we don’t need to add all the extras. Coming back to our basic principle of less is more.
Gentle face cleansing with Nathalie Bond Soap Blocks and moisturising with Nathalie Bond Skin Balm and body oils as well as face oil in the morning or evening (or both) will relieve oiliness. It’s also important to get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of water and eat a full and balanced healthy diet.
We hope this has helped bring clarity to the questions you have been asking about our choice to use oil.
