Nat set up Nathalie Bond Organics two years ago when she was pregnant with her first baby boy. Although she had been making candles and soap for a while, it was during pregnancy that she became aware of the importance of organic products and taking note of what you are absorbing into your skin. Nat recently gave birth to her second son and has some hints and tips for mums-to-be and post pregnancy care…
Q: The Nathalie Bond Organics Extra Sensitive Skin Balm and Wash Block are unscented and free from essential oils, have you found them useful during and post pregnancy?NB: I have found them both very useful. Women are recommended not to use essential oils throughout the first trimester, so during this time I pretty much only used the Extra Sensitive Skin Balm and Wash Block to keep myself clean and moisturised. They are both fantastic – very soothing and very calming. They also gave me the opportunity to do a little bit of pampering whilst knowing that what I was putting on my skin was completely harm free. So, I loved using them during my first trimester and would highly recommend them! Post pregnancy, I have been using the skin balm as a nipple cream. I recently discovered that, although Lansinoh is the most common nipple cream, it is actually not that great because it contains Lanolin, which is the greasy discharge found in a sheep’s sebaceous glands and it is packed with pesticides. Wool is drenched in chemicals to remove parasites before the lanolin is removed. When I found that out, I decided I certainly didn’t want it on my nipples and certainly nowhere near my newborn!
Q: Have you been able to use any products on your newborn too?NB: Yes, I have. I have been using the Extra Sensitive Wash Block on Ted from birth and I have also used the Extra Sensitive Skin Balm too. When he was first born he had a little bit of dry skin around his wrists and obviously he had the cord area as well, which is kind of an open wound when it drops off. So, I just used the skin balm around those areas and that seemed to help the healing process and kept the cord area clean.
Q: Are there any other products you've found helpful post pregnancy?NB: I have been using a tea called Neuners Organic Nursing Tea and I have found that amazingly helpful, because herbs like fenugreek and milkthistle are meant to be really good for milk production. We also work with an amazing stockist called Oh Me Oh Mama and my sister-in-law sent me a parcel from them, which included some oat cookies. Oates are meant to be really good for milk production as well, so I have been having more porridge and stuff like that in the mornings and that seems to be helping my milk production too.
Q: Why do you think it is important to use organic skincare products?NB: I guess in simple terms; what you apply to your skin is as important as what you put into your body. If you are putting organic skincare on your body, you know that you’re using the highest quality ingredients and that it hasn’t been tampered with. You also know the products are natural and no pesticides and preservatives have been used in the creation process. Organic products also encourage sustainability and good farming too. I think using organic is especially important when you’ve got a newborn because their skin is so tender and sensitive – it hasn’t been affected buy the world yet – so if you can protect it at the beginning you’ve probably got a better chance of avoiding early eczema and that sort of thing.
Q: When Ted and Alfie are finally in bed and fast asleep, what do you like to do to unwind?NB: I am still quite far off getting my evenings back because, although Alfie goes to bed at a certain time, Ted is still awake and needs feeding. But, when I do get a moment, weirdly enough, I find ironing quite relaxing! So I might put on a podcast or something like that and do some ironing. And the most obvious relaxing activity is hanging out with my husband!
We have put Nat’s two favourite products, Extra Sensitive Skin Balm and Wash Block into a delightful Gift Box for a Christmas treat! Our Ultra Sensitive Gift Box is suitable for mums-to-be, breastfeeding mums or just those with sensitive skin.
