Life and Business Interview #3: Kayti Feather

April 25, 2016

Caboodle Magazine

We recently had the pleasure of appearing in Caboodle, the most colourful, creative and magical magazine you could think of. Nat had a good chat about organic skincare and why it is important to consider going natural with your routine. You can see us on pages 73-75 of the current issue. In the press coverage process we met Creative Director, Kayti Feather. Kayti lives in the countryside just outside of York. Before she founded Caboodle in 2014, she worked as a fashion photographer for 15 years. We get to know her and her colourful life a bit better...

Name a favourite childhood memory…
Ooh so many good ones! I used to LOVE going to The American Adventure theme park and dressing up like a cowgirl! Must be where my love of everything Wild West stems from! And watching Wayne’s World on repeat with my dad or when me and my mum used to give my pony a bath, I used to put my swimsuit on and get covered in bubbles. I guess it was an easy way to clean us both at the same time haha!

Night in or night out?
Hmmmm, night in! I love getting cosy with a good movie, lots of snacks and a dog on my knee. I also love themed parties, currently planning a Wild West Hoedown for my 35th birthday next month and I’d also love to do a 70s inspired soiree by the end of summer too. Prawn cocktails, pineapple and cheese hedgehog, Babysham, Black Forest Gateaux; we can all wear over the top 70’s gowns and listen to disco music, totally Abigails Party!!

You are listening to…
I have a record player in my office so I’m always listening to whatever vinyl I have just picked up at the car boot or charity shops! I buy a lot of records purely because I like the artwork so it makes for quite an eclectic playlist!

Favourite item of clothing?
I love groovy 60s print mini dresses and am always on the lookout for more! I love wearing them with bright coloured tights and a colourful pair of earrings, monochrome I am not!

Favourite beauty product?
We just did an article on natural beauty for the latest issue of the mag so I’ve been lucky enough to have tried out loads of organic brands lately and am a total convert! I love Mimi’s Organics Face Oil, Moa’s Bath Potion, Nathalie Bond Organics Body Scrub and Bodhi & Birch Cleanser so much!! And I never leave the house without a bright lipstick!

Favourite quote?
“Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted”. I always seem to keep busy, even on days off I have an endless to do list and always feel guilty if I’m not achieving something and ticking something off it. But it’s really important to remember to truly switch off when you can! Read that book, sit in the sunshine for 10 minutes, take yourself on a day out exploring somewhere new… and don’t for a second feel guilty about it as these little pleasures are what life is about and are so good for the soul!!

Why did you establish Caboodle?
I had always dreamt of starting a magazine so when the time was right it just sort of happened and it fell into place, I met Amy and we made it happen! I always wanted it to be a really fun and colourful read that showcases tons of amazing creative and makers, which I think we’ve achieved! It still feels a bit unreal, a friend sent me a picture this week of Caboodle on the shelf in Selfridges and I’m still a bit shell shocked!!

What is the best thing about running your own business?
Getting to meet so many amazing creative and inspiring people along the way has been awesome! And starting the magazine has made me fall in love with photography all over again really, it’s the perfect outlet for all my crazy ideas!

And the worst?
I’m a bit of a perfectionist so can be really hard on myself if something goes wrong or doesn’t turn out the way I planned, I’ve always been like that though! When you are running the show you’ve no-one to blame but yourself haha!

What does a typical day look like for you?
I wake up early and have a cuppa, then usually check my emails and write a list for the day’s tasks, I am a bit of an epic list writer! I then work on design or photography bits – every day is different. Sometimes I’ll be in the studio working on a project or for a specific client, or I might be on the laptop all day! I love it when I have to source props for a brief so I have the perfect excuse to trawl round the charity shops and car boots, heaven!! I try to make time for an hour in the garden everyday, I have a little allotment and a lot of weeds to contend with so it gets out of control easily, plus its important for me to get away from the screen so I don’t go crazy!!

Who is your biggest inspiration?
I am inspired by anyone who works hard and is passionate about what they do, so many great girl bosses out there who are smashing it right now! Photography wise I get inspired by movies and old music videos. A lot of my fashion shoots have strong narratives so I love being able to tell a story, I just shot an editorial based on my favourite character, Luna Lovegood, which was sooo much fun! I spent months making props and it came together so well!

What would be your perfect day off?
I would take my doggies on a nice walk somewhere with my friends, then maybe sit out at a café and have tea and scones with lots of jam and cream! Most days off revolve around cake.
